This is the pilot project commonly called iStructures for the USC Engineering Technology Transfer Center. iStructures will incorporate the very latest "smart building" IT (information technology) communications technology.

A smart building offers a competitive advantage for its occupants by seamlessly integrating their business systems to customers and suppliers any where in the world. This competitive advantage will be further  leverage by using the infrastructure to create and maintain a modern workforce. The cost  of the modern workforce will be greatly reduced by an infrastructure that is compatible with a variety of distance learning  and training environments. This type of advanced infrastructure lowers maintenance cost by centralizing services and support.

This high-tech demonstration facility will be linked to the Technology Incubator at San Diego City College, managed by the Center for Applied competitive Technologies (CACT), another EDA-funded facility. Each workspace in the Knowledge center will be pre-wired to accommodate the next generations of Internet technology, the next generation Internet (NGI) and Internet 2.

iStructure will be fully compatible with other EDA-funded incubators and industrial parks to demonstrate the power of interconnectedness among these important facilities. This careful planning will demonstrate the important benefits of computer hardware and communications pre-planning.

This pilot leverages existing distance learning and commercial projects presently sponsored by EDA. With the first generation "smart building" in San Diego, this second generation "smart building" here at USC demonstrates how state-of-the-art technology, consistent with "smart buildings" technology, can be used to electronically link all EDA projects throughout the region.
